Overview

Marinus Link is a transmission project of national significance, comprising an electricity and telecommunications interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria. It will enable the flow of electricity between the two states, delivering low-cost, reliable and clean energy for customers in the National Electricity Market. The project will enable excess energy generated on the mainland to be stored in Tasmania’s hydro storage for use when demand outstrips supply, and Tasmania’s renewable energy and storage resources will also be available for use throughout the National Electricity Market as a result of Marinus Link. The 1500 megawatt (MW) interconnector will have a capacity equal to the power supply for 1.5 million homes, and will help Australia to meet its emissions reduction targets.

The Victorian component of Marinus Link includes approximately 90km of underground cables extending from the land-sea joint located behind the coastal dunes at Waratah Bay, to the converter station at Hazelwood.
