Playground Soil Remediation and Human Health Risk Assessment
Project Overview
The City of Glen Eira approached Beveridge Williams’ environmental division during the planning phase of upgrade works for Princes Park Playground. Preliminary assessments previously completed by the Council identified potential contamination impact.
Work Undertaken
Beveridge Williams completed a detailed soil sampling and testing regime around the playground area, which enabled the creation of a thorough conceptual site model, providing a better understanding of soil conditions at the site.
A Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) was completed for the playground based on the complex dataset collected by BW. The HHRA determined that site remediation was not necessary for the entire playground and that only a minor remediation exercise was required in an isolated portion. The remainder of the playground soil could be safely managed during the park construction process.
By spending more on detailed sampling and testing and completing a thorough human health risk assessment, we estimate the client saved in excess of $100,000. Moreover, the park upgrade works were able to be completed months earlier than projected, allowing for the park upgrades to be completed safely and during late-summer
