2024 AILA NT LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS

Shae HusseyAwards, News

Our Darwin landscape team has recently celebrated three awards at the 2024 Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture (AILA) Awards.

Baruwei Lookout was awarded with both the AILA NT Award of Excellence for Tourism and the AILA NT Regional Achievement Award. The jury commended the project for its “technical solution to address concerns of aging infrastructure in an incredibly elegant and place-sensitive way for visitors’ to connect with Jawoyn Country.”

Baruwei Lookout offers breathtaking views of Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge). The lookout was upgraded to address concerns about safety, overcrowding, and the overall visitor experience. The redesigned space was constructed using simple organic forms, colours, and materials to blend seamlessly into the landscape. The long viewing deck takes cues from the surrounding sandstone Country, wrapping around rock outcrops to provide changing viewpoints for day-to-day activities and the bustling peak periods during sunrise or sunset.

In addition to the Baruwei wins, CLOUSTON’s Senior Landscape Architect, Samuel Hare, received the 2024 AILA NT President’s Award. This award recognised Samuel’s ongoing commitment and contributions to the profession and practice of Landscape Architecture in the Northern Territory over many years.

Samuel’s notable achievements include doubling the NT chapter’s engagement with government, coordinating ‘Learning about Country’ events with the local Larrakia community, and advocating for diverse issues.

Congratulations to Samuel and the NT Landscape team on this important recognition.
